How to Clean a Shower Head
Step 1: Rub the Nozzles
Flexible rubber nozzles are often found on shower heads. It is possible to remove mineral build-up from these nozzles by simply massaging each one with your finger. A toothbrush can also be used to scrub the nozzles gently.
Step 2: Soak with Vinegar
There are two ways how to do it.
In case you prefer to leave the showerhead attached to the pipe, follow these steps:
- Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and wrap the bag around the showerhead.
- Use a rubber band, tape, or twist tie to secure the bag around the head.
- Allow the bag to rest around the shower head for 30 minutes.
- Remove the bag from the shower head and run the water for a few minutes to clear the vinegar from it.
- Wipe the shower head with cloth to make it shine.
In case you don’t mind taking the shower head out of the pipe, follow these steps:
- A container full of white vinegar can be submerged of the shower head.
- Soak the shower head in vinegar for 30 minutes.
- You should then reconnect the shower head to the shower pipe and run water through it for several minutes to remove the vinegar.
- Then wipe the shower head with cloth to make it shine.

Step 3: Clean the Filter Screen
Depending on the shower head, you may need to consult the instruction manual for cleaning the filter screen. If you have lost the manual, do not worry! It is usually available on the website or through customer service.
Filter screens are typically located in the part of the shower head that connects to the water pipe. The shower head must be removed from the pipe in order to access the filter screen.
Usually the filter screen of Waterpik® brand shower heads can be removed by gently brushing it out. The screen can also be removed from the pivot ball using tweezers/needle-nose pliers.
After it is removed from the pivot ball, the screen should be run under water to remove any buildup. A toothbrush can also be used to gently brush away mineral deposits.
Put the filter screen back into the pivot ball and reconnect the shower head to the shower pipe.
Note:
Do not use any harsh checmicals as it might damaged your showerhead.

FAQs
Let the shower head soak in vinegar for about 30 minutes. The finish may become damaged if left unattended. You can dilute the vinegar with water if you want to soak it for longer.
Shower heads should NEVER be cleaned with bleach or any other harsh chemicals.
Mineral deposits from hard water are the most common reason for clogged showerheads. Calcium and manganese minerals make this hard water difficult to lather when taken as a shower.
