Mold can be a problem for anyone. We all know that mold is something we want to avoid, but not everyone knows how to remove it from wood.

I’ve created this blog post to help you understand the different ways in which you can get rid of mold and what materials will work best for your needs.

Let’s get started!

How to Remove Mold From Wood

Step 1: Wear some protective gears

Mold can be dangerous if it is inhaled or ingested, so it is important to protect yourself. Ensure you wear eye protection, a mask to cover your nose and mouth, and rubber gloves as you clean.

Step 2: Vacuum the wood

  • Remove any loose mold spores from the affected area of wood using a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
  • Take time to clean the area, then take the vacuum outside to dispose of its contents after running it over the area.
  • In order to avoid spores escaping, ensure that the vacuumed material must be tightly sealed in a plastic bag.

Step 3: Clean the mold

Mold that hasn’t penetrated deeply into the wood can probably be removed with this simple cleaning solution.

All you need is dishwashing soap and warm water.

  • Fill a spray bottle with warm water and add 1 teaspoon of dishwashing soap. Make sure to shake it well.
  • Then spray the area and scrub gently to remove the mold with a soft-bristled brush, sponging up any excess liquid as you do.
  • Use a towel to dry the wood completely.

Clean the mold with vinegar

If the mold already penetrated into the wood, then try using distilled white vinegar.

Vinegar can also act as a disinfectant that can kill viruses and bacteria.

  • Pour equal parts vinegar and warm water into a spray bottle. Then spritz it to the mold.
  • Let the solution sit for 1 hour.
  • Then wipe it down using a moistured cloth, followed by a dry towel.

Clean the mold with borax

If cleaning mold with vinegar doesn’t work, then it’s time to use Borax. It is an alkaline mineral salt cleaner and much safer to use than bleach.

  • To remove mold, mix a tablespoon of borax and a cup of water, then apply this solution to the mold.
  • Using a soft-bristled brush, scrub away the mold. But don’t sponge the borax solution yet. You want the solution to stay into the wood to prevent future mold growth.
  • You can run a dehumidifier or fan in the room to ensure the wood dries properly, with the Borax still under the surface.

It is not recommended to use bleach on wood to kill mold. Bleach works well on surfaces without pores, but it does not completely remove the mold on wood.

Due to the fact that chlorine in bleach cannot penetrate wood, only the water portion of bleach can be absorbed.

Although it may appear that the mold is gone from the surface, it will continue to grow underneath and return within a few months.

Step 4: Sand the wood, if necessary

Mold should be removed by those cleaning solutions, but if there are still some traces remaining below the surface, the last option is to sand.

  • Sand out the affected area with 100-grit sandpaper while taking care not to sand away too much of the surrounding area.
  • Then vacuum to remove the dust.
